Tartan, heraldry & the story

One specific Register record, not every colourway or branch tartan.
Crown copyright, Scottish Register of Tartans. Private editorial review; public reuse clearance pending.Image & record source
Heraldry artwork is still being checked for source accuracy and reuse permission. We will not fill the space with an invented or borrowed retailer crest.
Tartan swatches here are for private editorial review. Public reuse needs a rights check before launch. The Register's image permission is limited to credited fair-dealing uses; design rights can still apply.
The story behind the name
The society traces its name to Thomas, called Tomaidh Mor (Great Tommy), a descendant of Clan Chattan Mackintoshes. Its history places the clan in Glenshee and later Glenisla. This is the society's clan narrative, not proof that every MacThomas surname has that descent. Clan story source
A surname story is a starting point, not your family tree. To connect yourself to it, work back through named relatives and records. A faire souvenir or surname-matched coat of arms does not establish descent or heraldic entitlement.

What is the MacThomas crest?
The society specifies the chief's crest within a buckled strap bearing the motto. It says the crest without strap and buckle is personal to the chief and there is no such thing as clan arms. Source
Is there a Clan MacThomas coat of arms I can use?
The Court of the Lord Lyon says a clan cannot have a coat of arms. The chief's arms belong to the chief; a clan member may use the chief's crest in a belt-and-buckle badge. A shared surname does not give you the chief's personal arms. Lord Lyon guidance
Can I wear the tartan without joining?
The Scottish Register of Tartans says there are no laws about which tartan you may wear, only traditions. Membership and ancestry are separate questions. Register guidance
