Find your people. Know where to start.
Clan facts, society links and sourced gatherings in one place. Unknowns stay labelled; a name match does not establish ancestry.
Find a local clan community
State and area commissioners, not separate state societies. The current parent society lists the following areas. Use its official commissioner page for current contacts; no personal addresses are republished here.
- Florida
- Indiana
- Kentucky
- Michigan
- New York City & New Jersey
- Southern Appalachia
- Utah
Is there a society near me?
Start with the listed branch or commissioner for your area. A commissioner is not automatically a separate society. Local attendance, meetings and next event dates must be checked with that branch.
Tartan, heraldry & the story

One specific Register record, not every colourway or branch tartan.

A labelled historical reference to the chief's arms. Not a clan badge and not every Kincaid's arms. Do not adopt it as your own.

Tartan swatches here are for private editorial review. Public reuse needs a rights check before launch. The Register's image permission is limited to credited fair-dealing uses; design rights can still apply.
The story behind the name
The association links the name to Kincaid lands in Campsie and presents several possible explanations for the older place-name, rather than one certain translation. Its castle story follows Kincaid House, Woodhead and the later Lennox Castle. The DNA project also describes separate family trees. The interesting story is a place, a community and several lines, not a guarantee that every Kincaid inherits one pedigree or coat of arms. Clan story source
A surname story is a starting point, not your family tree. To connect yourself to it, work back through named relatives and records. A faire souvenir or surname-matched coat of arms does not establish descent or heraldic entitlement.
Your Kincaid questions, answered
Where does Clan Kincaid come from?
The association places the Kincaid heartland in Campsie, north of Kirkintilloch, between the Campsie Fells and Kirkintilloch. It treats the name origin as uncertain rather than asserting one Gaelic translation. History source
Does my surname belong to Clan Kincaid?
The association says there are over 50 spelling variations and that the name comes from Kincaid lands in Campsie. Use its name history as a lead, then verify your own family records. Name-list source
What is the Kincaid tartan?
The Scottish Register of Tartans lists "Kincaid of Kincaid" in its Clan/Family category, with Lochcarron of Scotland as designer. This profile does not yet verify the exact colourway or a retailer's kilt options. Tartan source
What is Clan Kincaid's motto?
"This I'll Defend", as listed by the Scots of Canada directory. Motto source
How do I join a Kincaid society?
The association welcomes people connected by family, marriage or an interest in Kincaid history and heritage. Its joining page asks you to complete a new or renewal application, then proceed to payment. Dues are not quoted here because the final payment amount has not been verified. Membership source
When is the next Kincaid gathering?
No dated next gathering has been verified for this record. Ask the organisation rather than reuse an old festival date.
What is the Kincaid arms blazon?
The Commons reference labels Kincaid of Kincaid arms: "Gules a fess Ermine between in chief two mullets Or and in base a triple-towered castle Argent masoned Sable." In plain shape and colour terms: a red shield, an ermine horizontal band, two gold stars above and a silver triple-towered castle with black masonry below. This is not a grant to everyone named Kincaid; symbolic meanings are not asserted here. Source
What is the Kincaid crest?
The Scots of Canada directory describes a triple-towered castle, with an arm rising from the central tower holding a broadsword. A crest badge is not a personal coat of arms. Source
Which castles and places are connected to Clan Kincaid?
The association describes Kincaid House, Woodhead House and Lennox Castle. It says Kincaid House was sold in 2025 and is now a private residence, not an operating hotel. Treat these as heritage places, not promised visitor attractions. Source
Does Clan Kincaid offer a DNA project or genealogy help?
Yes. The association links a Kincaid DNA project and describes several family trees, including genetically unrelated Kincaids. It also offers a genealogy overview. A project link is not proof of your ancestry or an endorsement to submit DNA. Source
Where can I find Kincaid kilt and tartan information?
The association has a shop page pointing to third-party retailers of Kincaid items. This directory does not verify stock, kilt options, prices or a particular tartan pattern. Source
Is there a Clan Kincaid coat of arms I can use?
The Court of the Lord Lyon says a clan cannot have a coat of arms. The chief's arms belong to the chief; a clan member may use the chief's crest in a belt-and-buckle badge. A shared surname does not give you the chief's personal arms. Lord Lyon guidance
Can I wear the tartan without joining?
The Scottish Register of Tartans says there are no laws about which tartan you may wear, only traditions. Membership and ancestry are separate questions. Register guidance
